OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss kicked off spring football drills here Friday afternoon as Coach David Cutcliffe sent his Rebels through a two-hour workout in shorts.
It was the first on-the-field action for the Rebels since defeating Texas Tech, 35-18, in the 1998 Sanford Independence Bowl.
"I thought we had a great deal of intensity and enthusiasm, both as a staff and as a squad," Cutcliffe said.
Cutcliffe also noted that he was pleased with the overall condition of the squad, which was a carryover from the bowl game and the off-season conditioning program.
"We have a conditioned football team," Cutcliffe said. "They were able to come out here and work at the tempo and pace that we wanted them to work. That's a tribute to our conditioning staff. "From a football standpoint, I thought we had some carryover from the bowl game. There were some people who knew where they were going and what they were doing. However, it's evident that we have a ways to go."
The Rebels will work again Saturday in shorts before putting on the pads next Tuesday. Spring drills will conclude April 17 with the annual Red-Blue game.
