Softball Heads to Florida Tournaments

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team will travel to Tampa, Fla., to participate in the Speedline and Reebok tournaments March 4-10, and then travel to Tallahasse for the Florida State Invitational March 12-14.

The Rebels, 8-3, are coming off a successful trip to the Southwest Missouri State Classic in Springfield, Mo. Ole Miss went 3-1 during the tournament, defeating Iowa State twice and splitting two games with S.W. Missouri State.

Ole Miss will open the Speedline Tournament against New Mexico St. at noon on Thursday and them play the University of South Florida at 6 p.m.

The Rebels will then face Western Michigan at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Ball St. at 1 p.m. Ole Miss will conclude bracket play with a 10 a.m. game against Oklahoma St. on Sunday. The championship round will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday and conclude with the semi-finals and finals Sunday.

Streak Snapped
Pitcher Amanda Fine's scoreless innings streak ended at 16 when she gave up two runs in the bottom of the third inning against Southwest Missouri State. Fine gave up three hits in the game and struck out three batters. During the three game streak, Fine allowed only seven hits, three walks and fanned 10.

En Fuego
Right fielder Heather Swinney hit an impressive .385 during the S.W. Missouri State Classic. Swinney also drove in a career high four runs in the Rebels first game against Iowa State. Swinney finished the tournament with 5 RBI and two runs scored.

En Fuego, too
Junior 3B Kaci Coffee set a career high with three hits against Iowa St. and finished with a .462 average for the tournament. Coffee also knocked in 5 RBI, scored three runs, doubled and tripled during the tournament.

Runnin' Rebs
After 11 games this season the Rebels have stolen 20 bases, almost half its 1998 total of 51. Shortstop Mandy Shklar leads the team with eight stolen bases followed by CF Stephanie Vaglica with six swipes.

Timely Hitting
Ole Miss batters continue their hot hitting with runners on base this season. The Rebels are hitting .359 with runners on and .297 with runners in scoring position. The Rebels are also hitting .376 with two outs and have driven in 26 two-out RBI. Right fielder Heather Swinney leads the team with five two-out RBI, followed by 1B Korrie Kashuba and C Allison Willrath each with four.

Carrying the Load
So far this season Amanda Fine has pitched in 38 (51 percent) of the 74 total innings by Rebel pitchers. The junior from Brentwood, Tenn., has appeared in eight of Ole Miss' 11 games, and has a 4-2 record with one save.

Almost Perfect
Junior pitcher Amanda Fine just missed throwing a perfect game against Texas Tech. Fine, a second team All-SEC player in 1998, gave up a lead-off single in the top of the sixth to break up the perfect game. Fine finished with a three-hit shutout over the Red Raiders and struck out four batters.

Shklar Shines
Junior SS Mandy Shklar opened the 1999 season in grand style hitting .389, driving in three runs and hitting her first career home run at the UT-Arlington Classic. Shklar also scored four runs , doubled and stole four bases.

Coming Through in the Clutch
With one out in the top of the seventh inning and trailing N.E. Louisiana 2-1, freshman LF Jessica Hamilton delivered a two-run single to give the Rebels a 3-2 victory. Hamilton finished the tournament hitting .500, with two doubles and two RBI.

Letts Leads the Way
Candi Letts enters her first year as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels after coming over from Colorado State. In her sixth year as a collegiate head coach, Letts amassed a 155-105-1 record in five years with the Rams. Letts also lead Colorado State to a 51-win season and a WAC championship in 1997.

Austin. . .Also went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and three runs scored against SFA . . .Went 5-for-8 with a double and two runs scored in double-header against Belmont.

3B Kaci Coffee
Has started all 11 games at 3B. . .Tied for team lead with 8 RBI. . .Had career high three hits against Iowa St. . .Hit first career home run against Oklahoma. . .Also drove in 2 RBI and scored a run against Sooners. . .Second on team with 27 assists.

2B Rachel Davenport
Has started at 2B in every game for Rebels . . .Hitting .300 with runners on base. . .Team high 62 percent success rate for advancing runners.

1B Korrie Kashuba
Started seven games at 1B and two as DH . . .Tied for team lead with 8 RBI. . .Went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI against S.W. Missouri St. . .Went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run against SFA . . .Drove in only runs in 2-0 win over Texas Tech.

C Allison Willrath
