Softball Sweeps Kentucky, 3-1 and 10-1

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Rebel shortstop Mandy Shkar posted a 6-for-8 performance at the plate to lead Ole Miss to a 3-1, 10-1 sweep of Kentucky in Southeastern Conference softball action on Sunday. Shklar also had three runs scored and two RBI in the sweep.
With the two victories, Ole Miss improved to 25-24 overall and 7-13 in the league. The Wildcats fall to 21-32 overall and 4-12 in the SEC.
The Rebel offense exploded for 13 runs and 21 hits in the two games. Junior Korrie Kashuba went 3-for-5 in the two games, while freshman Mackenzie Emel blasted the first homer of her collegiate career, a three-run shot in the second game.
In game one, Kentucky took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Leslie Kwiatkowski led off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice.
The Wildcats continued to hold their 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh when the Rebels scored three runs to take the win. Kashuba led off with a walk, and later scored on a Stephanie Vaglica single to tie the game at 1-1. The Rebels then added two runs, as Brittany Maxey scored on a passed ball and Vaglica was plated on a Shklar sacrifice. Kentucky was unable to get a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, and Ole Miss took the win, 3-1.
The second game saw the Rebels jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings, and they never looked back. Ole Miss scored its four runs on six hits in the first two innings. The Rebels added two more runs in the top of the fourth, and four in the top of the seventh for a commanding 10-0 advantage. Emel had the big hit in the seventh, recording a three-run homer. Kentucky managed to get one run in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-1 final.
Senior Kari Abney (3-4) picked up the win for the Rebels in game one, while sophomore Jennifer Hughes (11-7) took the victory in the second game.
The Rebels return to action April 23-24 when they host Auburn in a four-game series at the Ole Miss Softball Stadium. The Friday doubleheader begins at 5:00 p.m., with the Saturday doubleheader to start at 1:00 p.m.
