OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend to participate in the annual Alabama Relays. More than 50 teams and 1,500 competitors will take part in the event which begins on Thursday, Mar. 26 and will run through Sunday, Mar. 29.

The Alabama Relays, which will be held at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium on the University of Alabama campus, will kick off on Thursday with the decathlon and heptathlon competitions. Friday's action will have the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon and the men's and women's 10,000-meter run. The individual field and running events will be held on Saturday, with all relays to take place on Sunday.

"This weekend's competition at Alabama is a great opportunity for our teams to see where they are because the event attracts so many outstanding athletes," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "This meet has produced a lot of great performances in the past, and I expect this year to be no different. Although we are still hampered somewhat by injuries, our athletes are ready to compete this weekend. This meet is only our second one of the outdoor season, so we will use it to build toward the SEC Championships in May. It will be a great weekend of competition, and both teams are looking forward to the challenge."

The Ole Miss men's and women's teams opened their outdoor seasons last Saturday, hosting the Mississippi Open in Oxford. Juniors Marcus Jones and Latoria Jordan both were double winners for Ole Miss in the Mississippi Open. Jones placed first in the high (6-8) and triple jumps (47-3 1/4) on the men's side, while Jordan paced the Lady Rebel effort with first-place finishes in both the long (18-1 3/4) and triple (39-1) jumps. Sophomore Daya Hampton, who will represent Ole Miss in the heptathlon at the Alabama Relays, was also a double winner for the Lady Rebels last Saturday, winning the shot put (26-6 1/4) and the javelin (81-1).

Other first-place finishers at last Saturday's meet were sophomore Tisha Parker in the 200 meters, junior Jimmy Love in the 400 meters, junior Wayne Woolery in the 400-meter hurdles, senior Sylvester Houston in the pole vault and freshman Savante' Stringfellow in the long jump.

After this weekend's action at Alabama, the Ole Miss men's and women's track and field squads will return home to host the Ole Miss Invitational on April 4. The April 4 meet will be held at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex, located adjacent to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
