OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field squads will travel to Starkville, Miss., on Saturday, Apr. 18 to compete in the Mississippi State Invitational. Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Western Kentucky and McNeese State will participate in the scored meet. In the latest United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) polls, the men's team was ranked No. 23, while the women's squad was No. 31.
Saturday's meet will be the midway point of the outdoor season for both the Rebels and Lady Rebels, and head coach Joe Walker is looking for his squads to use this competition as momentum builder for the Southeastern Conference Championships, which will be held in four weeks at the University of Florida.
"Saturday's meet will be an opportunity for us to begin to get our focus for the SEC Championships which are only a few weeks away," said Walker. "This is our fifth week of competition, and our athletes need to begin preparing themselves for the championships. Saturday's meet will also scored, and that will show us where we stand as a team. We are still battling a lot of injuries, but our teams are ready to compete on Saturday."
The jumps have been strong for both the men's and women's squad this season, with the Lady Rebels setting school records in the high, long and triple jumps. Last Saturday at the UTEP Invitational, junior Latoria Jordan set an Ole Miss record in the triple jump with a mark of 41-3. Earlier this season, sophomore Tisha Parker set the school record in the long jump (21-2), and freshman Emily Fontenot set the Ole Miss high jump mark (5-10). For the Rebels, junior Marcus Jones set an Ole Miss record in the high jump with a mark of 7-0
