WACO, Texas - Ole Miss Head Coach Tommy Tuberville has been added to the South coaching staff for the 1999 Hula Bowl All-Star Football Classic.
He will team with Washington State's Mike Price and two of the American Football Coaches Association's (AFCA) 1998 GTE National Coach of the Year winners to serve as the coaching staff for the South squad. Michigan's Lloyd Carr, Eastern Kentucky's Roy Kidd, Oklahoma State's Bob Simmons and one 1998 GTE Coach of the Year winner will coach the North squad.
"I grew up watching the Hula Bowl and it's a game I've always wanted to coach in," Tuberville said. It's an honor to be selected by the AFCA to coach in what is now the coaches' all-star game."
Tuberville led Ole Miss to an 8-4 record in 1997, earning a trip to the inaugural Motor City Bowl, where the Rebels defeated Marshall 34-31. Ole Miss finished the season ranked No. 22 in the nation, earning Tuberville SEC Coach of the Year honors from the Associated Press. In three years at Ole Miss, Tuberville has compiled a 19-15 record.
The Hula Bowl honor marks the second time Tuberville has been tabbed to coach in an all-star game. He was a member of the South coaching staff at the 1995 Blue-Gray game.
The 1999 Hula Bowl will be played Sunday, January 24 at War Memorial Stadium on Maui. The game will be televised nationwide on ESPN. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., CST, 3 p.m. Hawaii time.
The AFCA was founded in 1922 and currently has more than 8,000 members around the world, ranging from the high school level to the professional ranks. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and the coaching profession" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football and coaching."
