Volleyball Loses Last Regular-Season Match

STARKVILLE, Miss. - In the final regular-season match for both teams, Ole Miss lost to Mississippi State 9-15, 15-12, 15-4, 15-10 Sunday. Ole Miss dropped to 9-22 overall and 2-13 in the SEC, while Mississippi State improved to 9-19 and 5-10 in the SEC.

Ole Miss was led by Kari Elggren with 19 kills and eight digs, followed by Lauren Dorcheus with seven kills and seven digs. Dorcheus also recorded two block solos and six block assists. Danielle Atzinger led the Lady Rebels in digs with 18, followed by Lisa Frannino with 15 and Renata Nowacki with 11.

Christine Owen led State with 19 kills, followed by Melanie DiMuzio with 13 kills and 10 digs and Brianne Smedley with 12 kills, 10 digs and five block assists. Jenny Head added 21 digs.

In the first game, Ole Miss held serve and jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Mississippi State could get a sideout. A service ace by Nowacki gave the Lady Rebels an 8-0 lead, but State came back to make the score 10-5. Frannino's ace put Ole Miss up 14-9, and Elggren's kill closed out the game 15-9.

Ole Miss ran out to a 4-0 lead in the second game, but State stormed back to even the match and take a 6-4 lead. Elggren's kill evened the contest again at 7-7, but State went ahead 13-9 on Jill Ferguson's ace. Although Ole Miss closed the gap to 13-12 on Elggren's kill, the Lady Rebels could get no closer as State took the game 15-12.

State dominated the third game, running out to a 13-2 lead. Ole Miss made a small run with points on a Lauren Dorcheus block and a Frannino ace before State ended the game 15-4.

State again took a 7-0 lead in the fourth game, and the Lady Rebels scored their first point on a State attack error. Elggren's kill brought the Lady Rebels to within 9-5, and a State attack error made it 9-6. Ole Miss inched closer and scored three straight points on a block by Dorcheus, a kill by Jaime Burns and a block by Dorcheus and Leigh Rittiner to make the match 13-10. The Lady Rebels could get no closer, as State won the game 15-10 and the match 3-1.

Ole Miss will now prepare for the SEC Tournament Friday through Sunday at Fayetteville, Ark.
