Women's Tennis Competes in ITA S. Region Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - Agnes Muzamel and Celeste Frey dropped their quarterfinal matches at the ITA South Region Championships Sunday, while freshman Eva Doman won the consolation bracket. Both of Ole Miss' doubles teams lost in the semifinals.
Muzamel, the 1997 South Region Champion and currently ranked ninth in the nation, fell in three sets to Florida's Stephanie Hazlett 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Hazlett is ranked 71st in the country.
Frey lost to Baili Camino of Florida 6-4, 6-2, who is ranked 56th. Camino used to play No.1 for Alabama before transferring to Florida. Frey ends the fall campaign with a 18-7 record and seven wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
"I am proud of what the team has achieved this fall," head coach Jerry Montgomery said. "They have been very committed to their tennis, worked hard and improved a lot. I have to give credit to the University of Florida (defending NCAA Champions) because they showed the difference today in No. 1 and No. 7 (final 1998 team rankings for Ole Miss and Florida)."
Eva Doman downed Misty Riley of Troy State in the third round of consolation and then defeated Alabama's No. 1 player Jill Breslin 7-5, 6-0 in the final to win the consolation bracket.
In doubles, Ole Miss had two teams in the semifinals. Muzamel and Courtenay Chapman lost to 10th-ranked Jessica Lenhoff and Stephanie Nickitas of Florida 8-0 and then Frey and Mariana Eberle lost to the team of Martina Ondrejkova and Iva Puflerova of South Alabama 8-4.
The Lady Rebels will open the spring season Jan. 16 when they host UAB in a dual match at 11:00 a.m.
