Women's Tennis Knocks off No. 28 Virginia Tech

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 6 nationally-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team posted its fourth consecutive shutout with a 9-0 win over 28th-ranked Virginia Tech Sunday at the Women's Sports Complex.
The Lady Rebels (4-0) took a 1-0 lead as Ivona Mihailova defeated Vanessa Pardo 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Senior Agnes Muzamel, showed why she is ranked No. 3 in the nation, as she held off Ines Khelfi 6-3, 7-5. Muzamel had to rally from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to avoid a third set.
Courtenay Chapman downed Gloria Gutinas 6-3, 6-2 at the fourth spot, and Mariana Eberle cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Daga Mrozek at No. 5 singles to give the Lady Rebels a commanding 4-0 lead.
Celeste Frey clinched the victory for Ole Miss, making a stellar comeback in the third set after blowing a huge lead in the second set. Frey was ahead 6-1, 4-1 in the second before seeing Majka Serafini come back to win the second set 6-4 and take a 5-2 lead in the third. Frey broke back twice and held serve before going on to win the deciding set 7-5.
Freshman Aleysa Ignatieva dominated Kelly Smith 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles and then Ole Miss won all three doubles matches for a perfect sweep.
Ole Miss will return to action Feb. 13 as they host SMU at 11:00 a.m. Muzamel, Frey and Eberle will compete in the Rolex National Indoor Championships Feb. 4-7 at the Brookhave Country Club in Dallas, Texas. The Rolex National Indoor Championships is the third leg of the collegiate grand slam.
