Women's Tennis Players Advance at ITA South Region Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - Top-seeded Agnes Muzamel of the Ole Miss women's team advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA South Region Championships Saturday along with teammate Celeste Frey, while two Lady Rebel doubles teams advanced to the semifinal round.
Muzamel, the defending champion, defeated Mary-Carlisle White of Florida 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 in the round of 16. Muzamel takes on Stephanie Hazlett of Florida in the quarterfinal round Sunday.
Celeste Frey, the second seed, dominated Ivana Belancic of Mississippi State 6-2, 6-2. Frey will meet Baili Camino of Florida in the quarterfinals Sunday.
Jackson native Courtenay Chapman lost to 13th-ranked Stephanie Nickitas of Florida 6-4, 6-0, while fifth-seeded Ivona Mihailova lost to Whitney Laiho of Florida 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles action, two of Ole Miss' teams made it to the semifinals. Defending champions Muzamel and Chapman downed Lynn and Wyeth of Stetson 8-1 in the second round and defeated the team of Toyre and Gobey of South Alabama 8-3 in the quarterfinals. Mariana Eberle and Frey knocked off Guthrie and Uy of Georgia Tech 8-2 in the second round and Blazkova and Jakubekova of South Alabama 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
Ivona and Irena Mihailova allowed one game in an 8-1 second-round win over Weems and Linderb of Southern Mississippi but lost in the quarterfinals to Lenhoff and Nickitas of Florida by a score of 8-0.
Muzamel and Chapman will take on top-seeded Lehnhoff and Nickitas of Florida in the semifinals on Sunday, while Eberle and Frey play Ondrejkova and Puflerova of South Alabama in the other semifinal match.
Ole Miss also picked up wins in the consolation singles. Irena Mihailova and Eberle advanced to the second round as both of their competitors withdrew. In the second round Sunday, Mihailova will take on Meredith Laughlin of Miami, while Eberle plays Jessica Balbuena of Florida State. Eva Doman downed Xenia Uy of Georgia Tech 7-5, 6-0 and received a bye for the second round.
The tournament continues Sunday with the singles quarterfinals, doubles semifinals and the second round of consolation singles.
