Women's Volleyball Finishes Spring Season Strong

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's volleyball team wrapped up its six-week spring season by going 3-3 in its own four-team tournament at the Women's Multi-Sport Complex Saturday.
Playing two games to 30 points in a rally-scoring format, the Lady Rebels opened the tourney by splitting two games with Memphis. Ole Miss then lost two games to NCAA Tournament participant Arkansas State before concluding the day with two wins over intrastate rival Mississippi State. Alabama-Birmingham was also scheduled to participate, but withdrew prior to Saturday.
"If you were going to draw it up, that is the way you would want to finish the tournament," Ole Miss head coach John Blair said. "Certainly, you want to win the last two matches of the spring season because it gives you something to build upon heading into the fall.
"The team played hard all day, but they played with more consistency in the last match and that is why we won the two games over MSU."
Despite only having eight players during the spring season, Blair thought the leadership and play of junior Danielle Atzinger and freshman setter Renata Nowacki were key components to the Lady Rebel's success over the weekend.
"Danielle played very consistent and Renata had her best day here at Ole Miss," he said. "Having small numbers put a premium on everybody playing and getting court time. That will help us in the fall because everybody is now battle-tested and more mature. We have a better idea of what to expect from everybody when they come back."
The Lady Rebels will return in August to begin the 1998 season. Ole Miss opens the schedule on the road against Tennessee-Martin on Sept. 1, but will then play its first home matches as it hosts the Ole Miss Tournament Sept. 4-5 at the Women's Multi-Sport Complex.
