OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss head coach John Blair announced today the signing of junior college transfer Kari Elggren to join the Lady Rebel volleyball team for the 1998 campaign.

Elggren, who led Utah Valley State College to a pair of NJCCA Tournaments berths, will enter as a junior outside hitter for Ole Miss, filling a void on the left side after the graduation of All-Southeastern Conference selection Susan Argue.

"Kari will bring two years of high-level junior college experience to our program," Blair said. "One of the reasons we went after her is because she is a great all-around player and a fierce competitor.

"She brings tremendous athleticism to our left-side hitting position. I hope the experience and maturity she brings as a player will add to our rotations."

Elggren, a Sandy Utah native, was a All-Region selection as a freshman for Utah Valley State College. In her sophomore campaign, Elggren was among the top 10 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) in kills per game, service aces per game, service receptions and digs per game.

Elggren, the daughter of Allen and Linda Elggren, starred at Alta High School, earning All-State and All-Region honors in both her junior and senior seasons. She graduated as the Hawks all-time leader in kills.

Elggren is the second student-athlete to sign with the Lady Rebels this spring, joining Louisiana All-State selection Leigh Rittiner or New Orleans. Rittiner will enter as a freshman after starring at St. Mary's Dominican High School.

The Lady Rebels will begin the 1998 campaign Sept. 1 against Tennessee-Martin on the road. The home opener will be Sept. 4 as the Lady Rebels host the Ole Miss Invitational Tournament.
