OXFORD, Miss. - Von Gretchen Kirk, a 5-10 guard/forward from Huntsville, Ala., has joined the Ole Miss women's basketball program for the 1999-2000 academic year, head coach Ron Aldy announced Tuesday.
Rated as one of the Top 25 JUCO players in the nation, Kirk comes from Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where she averaged 11.5 points per game in leading her team to the 1999 Junior College National Championship and a 36-0 record.
"Von is one of the most gifted three-point shooters that we've seen this summer with tremendous range behind the two or three-point line," Aldy said. "She can also put the ball on the floor and create other scoring opportunities. We expect her to come in and contribute early."
As a prep star at Butler Senior High School, Kirk was named the Most Valuable Player of the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game in 1998. During her senior year, she led Butler to the 6A Alabama State Championship with a 34-0 record. The team achieved a No. 3 national ranking in the USA Today Top 25 poll.
Kirk joins Kayla Madewell (Farmington, Ark.), Shayla Day (New Madrid, Mo.), Leah Henley (Warren, Ark.), Latasha Harris (Texarkana, Ark.), and Latasha Moore as the 1999-2000 recruiting class.
The 1999-2000 Lady Rebels return nine letterwinners, including four starters from last year's squad which posted the program's 23rd winning season and advanced to postseason play for the 15th time.
