OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe used Thursday's afternoon practice getting a good look at players who he hopes will provide depth at all positions this season.
As the Rebels continue to prepare for the upcoming season, Cutcliffe and his staff worked in younger players during Thursday's two-hour practice in pads, after spending the first half of the session observing the players expecting to fill starting roles.
"We worked with our starters early in practice and then we rested them to work with some of our younger players," Cutcliffe said. "We need to close the gap between our starters and some of the other players with the tempo and intensity we want. We are challenging our younger players to push themselves."
Cutcliffe says he saw a few bright spots with some of the younger skilled players, but they need to develop more consistency on both sides of the ball up front, with the younger guys.
"I saw some encouraging things in Tremaine Turner, Robert Williams and Eli Manning, and a few of the skilled players," Cutcliffe said. "We need to come back tomorrow and accomplish something before we get into Saturday, which is a big day for us."
Meet the Rebels Day will be held Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, and fans are encouraged to attend.
