Ole Miss Takes Two, Advances To Title Match

OXFORD, Miss.-- In the closest match this season, the Ole Miss Lady Rebel volleyball team defeated Wake Forest 3-2 in the nightcap of the Ole Miss Invitational on Friday. The Lady Rebels automatically advance to the title game Saturday at 3 p.m. to face the winner of the Wake Forest-Arkansas State game at 11 a.m.
Ole Miss (5-1), off to its best start in five years, had to hold off Wake Forest (6-2) in the final game 19-17 after ties at 15, 16 and 17 before senior captain Lauren Dorcheus put the game away.
The Lady Rebels and the Demon Deacons entered the match 1-0 after beating Arkansas State by 3-1 margins, both dropping the third game. Arkansas State (5-3) dropped to 0-2 in the tournament and will face elimination against Wake Forest Saturday morning.
After taking the 1-0 lead, the Lady Rebels dropped the second game 8-15. Bouncing back in the third, Ole Miss won 15-6. The Demon Deacons would not go away, taking the fourth game 15-10 and sending the match into the fifth and deciding game.
Lady Rebel sophomore Jaime Burns led the team and the tournament with 40 kills in two games. Demon Deacon Trina Maso de Moya led her team with 37 kills and a .263 attacking percentage. The Lady Indians were led by Shauna Standart with 35 kills and a .219 attacking percentage.
Last year, the Lady Rebels lost the title game of the Ole Miss Invitational to Rhode Island and finished in second place. This year they look for redemption.
