OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss men's golf team kicks off its season Monday and Tuesday at the Colorado State Ram Intercollegiate at Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Rebels will be joined by Air Force, Alabama, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Hawaii, Iowa State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Sam Houston State, Texas- Arlington, Utah and Wyoming. The Cornhuskers won the event in its inaugural season last year.
"We're looking forward to jumping into battle and see how we're going to show," said head coach Woody Cowart, who is entering his seventh season as Ole Miss coach."With eight teams from the 1999 NCAA Regionals competing, this is a pretty strong field.
"We're really excited about this season. With the four guys from last year's NCAA Championships returning, we should be ready to go. We've done a lot of preparing."
Ole Miss is coming off a landmark season. With the lineup of Haymes Snedeker, Jon Bartlett, Phil Caravia, Chris Malloy and Troy Muller, the Rebels advanced all the way to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1985. Snedeker graduated, but the other four return this season to lead Ole Miss in a run for its first national championship.
They will be joined in Colorado by first-year Rebel Cedric Denis. A native of Paris, France, Denis is a junior-transfer from Central Alabama Community College.
