Ole Miss Softball Wraps Up Successful Fall Tournament

OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebels' softball team went 5-1 over the weekend during the Ole Miss Softball Invitational.

The Rebels picked up wins over Nicholls State, Indian Hills Community College, West Alabama and Mississippi University for Women. Ole Miss' only loss was to Nicholls State, 1-0 on Saturday.

Senior Heather Swinney got the Rebels on the right track in the first game of the weekend with a three-run homer to give Ole Miss a 4-1 win over Indian Hills on Friday.

Jennifer Hughes picked up the win for Ole Miss in the first game, while Amanda Fine kept Indian Hills in check in the second game for a 4-3 Ole Miss victory.

On Saturday, Nicholls State picked up a 1-0 win over the Rebels, as Ole Miss out hit Colonels 11-3, but stranded 11 runners on base.

Ole Miss bounced back with a 8-0 win over West Alabama as freshman pitcher Lindsey Price allowed only one hit and struck out five.

On Sunday, the Rebels avenged their loss to Nicholls State with a 4-1 win over the Colonels. Ole Miss pitchers Brittany Maxey and Amanda Fine combined for a one hitter and freshman Holly Burris drove in two runs with a double during a three-run fifth inning.

In Sunday's final game, Ole Miss defeated the Mississippi University for Women, 4-2 behind Burris, who allowed two runs on three hits and retired eight of the first 10 hitters.

Mandy Shklar, Swinney, Mackenzie Emel and Kara Chapman each drove a run to pace the Ole Miss attack.

The Rebels begin the 2000 season on Feb. 11, at the Texas-Arlington Pepsi Classic.
