The Rebels won the first meeting between the two schools, 20-0, back in 1914. ASU?s lone win in the series came the following year, 10-0, in 1915. All 18 meetings have been played in Oxford.

REBELS SET FOR 105TH HOME OPENER: Saturday?s game will be the first of six home games this season for Ole Miss. This will be the Rebels? 105th home-opener and they have compiled an impressive 82-16-6 mark (.817 winning percentage). During the 1990s, Ole Miss is 8-1 in its home opener and has won its last seven. The last time the Rebels lost their first home game of the year was to Auburn, 23-13, in 1991. Also paying visits to Oxford this season are: Vanderbilt (Sept. 18), Tulane (Oct. 9), Alabama (Oct. 16), Arkansas (Nov. 6) and Georgia (Nov. 20). The game with the Green Wave on Oct. 9 will be the Homecoming contest.

CUTCLIFFE WINS REGULAR SEASON DEBUT: Saturday?s 3-0 win over Memphis allowed first-year head coach David Cutcliffe to become the first Ole Miss coach since Steve Sloan in 1978 to win his first regular-season game as a Rebel head coach. Prior to Cutcliffe, the last three Rebel coaches had dropped their regular-season debuts as Ole Miss? head coach: Billy Brewer to Memphis State, 37-17 in 1983, interim head coach Joe Lee Dunn to Auburn, 22-17 in 1994, and Tommy Tuberville, also to Auburn, 46-13 in 1995.

CUTCLIFFE?S 2-0 START FIRST BY AN OLE MISS COACH SINCE BILLY KINARD: With Saturday?s season-opening win over Memphis and the Rebels? victory in the Sanford Independence Bowl, David Cutcliffe became the first Ole Miss coach since Billy Kinard in 1971 to start out 2-0 as the Rebels? head coach. With a win this Saturday against Arkansas State, Cutcliffe can also become the first Rebel head coach since Kinard to start out his Ole Miss career at 3-0. Kinard?s 1971 Ole Miss team defeated Long Beach State (29-13), Memphis State (49-21) and Kentucky (34-20) in its first three games.

REBEL COACHES IN THEIR HOME DEBUTS: Since the legendary John Vaught won the first game he coached in Oxford, new Ole Miss football coaches are 5-2 in their Oxford debuts. The following chart shows how new Ole Miss head coaches have fared in their Oxford coaching debuts:

OLE MISS TO INDUCT SIX NEW MEMBERS INTO THE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME: Prior to this Saturday?s game with Arkansas State, Ole Miss will induct six new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame. This year?s class of inductees include: former football player and Athletic Director Warner Alford, Jamie Booras (men?s tennis), former women?s basketball All-American and current WNBA standout with the Phoenix Mercury Jennifer Gilliom, Harol Lofton (football), Dave Randall (men?s tennis) and Jack Reed (football/baseball). This year?s class will be officially inducted at 2:00 p.m. ceremony at the new Grove Pavilion. There will be another ceremony for the inductees at 5:35 p.m. in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/ Hollingsworth Field prior to the 6 p.m. kickoff with Arkansas State. The six inductees brings the Hall of Fame?s total membership to 145.

1959 REBEL FOOTBALL TEAM REUNION PLANNED FOR SATURDAY: The M-Club and the Ole Miss Athletic Department will be hold a luncheon Saturday at 11:30 a.m. prior to Ole Miss? game with Arkansas State in honor of the Rebels? 1959 Sugar Bowl Championship team. The 1959 squad went 10-1 and claimed the first of Ole Miss? three national championships and earned the title as the SEC?s ?Team of the Decade.?

THE DEFENSE RESTS: The 115 total yards of offense allowed by the Ole Miss defense Saturday night was the least amount of yards allowed by the Rebels since holding Vanderbilt to 51 total yards during a 49-7 win over the Commodores on Sept. 18, 1993. The last time Ole Miss held an opponent to less than 200 yards total offense was on Sept. 27, 1997, also against Vanderbilt, when the Rebels limited the Commodores to 189 total yards in a 15-3 win.

Ole Miss didn?t allow Memphis a single yard of total offense in 17 plays during the third quarter of Saturday?s game, and held the Tigers to an average of 1.9 yards per play on 62 total plays for the night. The Rebels also limited Memphis to an average of 0.09 yards on first down plays.

OLE MISS POSTS FIRST SHUTOUT SINCE 1994: Saturday?s 3-0 shutout of Memphis was the first by Ole Miss in 48 games since shutting out Tulane 38-0 in New Orleans on Nov. 12, 1994.

GUNN RECORDS THIRD CAREER 100-YARD RUSHING GAME: Sophomore RB Joe Gunn (Amory, Miss.) rushed for 114 yards on 25 carries this past Saturday against Memphis to record his third career 100-yard rushing game. Gunn rushed for 146 yards against Vanderbilt (9-19-98) and 122 yards versus Arkansas State (10-24-98) last season.

OLE MISS VS. THE BIG WEST CONFERENCE: Throughout its football history, Ole Miss has faced three current Big West members - Arkansas State, North Texas and SW Louisiana - and one Big West school that no longer plays football - Long Beach State. The Rebels are a combined 21-1-2 against those four schools. The following chart shows how Ole Miss has fared against the Big West Conference:

NOTE: Arkansas State is returning to the Big West Conference after playing as a Division I-A Independent from 1996-98. The Indians played in the Big West from 1993-95.

REBELS LOOK TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES: Saturday?s win over Memphis extended Ole Miss? winning streak against non-conference opponents to 16 games. The Rebels will look to make it 17 in a row this Saturday against Arkansas State. Saturday?s 3-0 win was the Ole Miss? second shutout of a non-conference opponent during the current 16-game streak. The Rebels started their non-conference winning streak with a 38-0 blanking of Tulane on Nov. 12, 1994. The last time the Rebels lost a non-conference opponent was against Memphis, 17-16, in Oxford back on Nov. 5, 1994. The following chart shows Ole Miss? recent success against non-conference opponents dating back to 1994:

LOVE THOSE NIGHT GAMES!!: Since lights were installed at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field prior to the 1990 season, Ole Miss has played under the lights 18 times. During that time, the Rebels have posted a 17-1 (.944 winning percentage) mark. Ole Miss won its first 17 home night games before losing to Mississippi State, 28-6, last year in the regular-season finale.

DID YOU KNOW?: Saturday?s 3-0 win over Memphis marked the first time in the history of Ole Miss football that the Rebels won a game by a 3-0 score. Ole Miss also lost a 3-0 game to LSU in1926, however, those two games are not the lowest scoring games in Ole Miss history.

Excluding a 1-0 forfeit by Castle Heights in 1912, the Rebels have been involved in 13 contests where both teams combined for two or less points. Ole Miss defeated Memphis A.C. 2-0 in 1895 and Memphis Medical College 2-0 in 1910, and also played 11 scoreless ties before NCAA Division I-A adopted overtime in 1996.

Ironically, Saturday?s 3-0 game was the lowest scoring game Ole Miss has been involved in since battling Memphis State to a scoreless tie in Memphis to open the 1963 season. The Rebels went on to win the SEC Championship that year with a 7-1-2 record.

BINKLEY STARTS CAREER OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT: Junior K Les Binkley (Memphis, Tenn.) literally got his Ole Miss career off on the right foot Saturday at Memphis as it was the right-footed kicker?s 40-yard field goal with 7:47 left in the game that gave Ole Miss the 3-0 win. The kick was Binkley?s first career attempt as a Rebel. Binkley came to Ole Miss after earning first team NJCAA and J.C. Gridwire All-America honors in 1998. SPEARMAN ON BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST: Senior LB Armegis Spearman (Bruce, Miss.) is one of of eight SEC players that are included on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, which is given by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Fla., to the nation?s top collegiate linebacker. Three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 11, and the winner will be named Dec. 10 during the 15th Annual Butkus Award Gala in Orlando.

Spearman tied junior DE Derrick Burgess (Riverdale, Md.) with a team-high five tackles, including four solo stops and two TFLs, in Ole Miss? 3-0 win over Memphis Saturday. Spearman also recorded one sack and helped the Rebel defense limit the Tigers to 115 total yards of offense.

For his career, Spearman has registered 191 career tackles, including 110 solo. He led the Rebels with 84 tackles last season, including 43 solo tackles, and also recorded two sacks for 27 yards.

McALLISTER NAMED PRESEASON DOAK WALKER CANDIDATE: Junior RB Deuce McAllister has been named as one of 38 preseason candidates for the 1999 Dr. Pepper Doak Walker Award. The list will be cut down to eight semifinalists in late November and the winner will be announced live on ESPN2?s Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 9.

McAllister gained 43 yards on seven attempts this past Saturday against Memphis in limited action due to a bruised left shoulder. He also caught one pass for 15 yards. The 43 yards of rushing pushed McAllister over the 1,500-yard mark for his career, as he now has 1,527 career rushing yards which ranks ninth all-time at Ole Miss (see chart to the right).

Last season, McAllister became the first Rebel rusher since 1950, and just the second in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. His 1,082 rushing yards from last season ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history, behind Kayo Dottley?s 1,312 set in 1949.

LUCKY NUMBER 30: Dating back to the 1989 season, Ole Miss has won its last 32 games when scoring 30 or more points in a game. The last time the Rebels scored 30 points and lost was against LSU on Nov. 4, 1989, when the Tigers defeated the Rebels 35-30 in Oxford. All seven of Ole Miss? wins last season, including in the Sanford Independence Bowl, came with the Rebels scoring 30 or more points.

WADE, SPEARMAN NAMED PERMANENT CAPTAINS FOR 1999: Senior LB Armegis Spearman and senior OT Todd Wade (Jackson, Miss.) have been named the Rebels? permanent team captains for the 1999 season. In addition, senior DT Kendrick Clancy (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), senior WR Cory Peterson (Germantown, Tenn.) and senior CB Tim Strickland (Memphis, Tenn.) have been named as the team?s permanent tri-captains for 1999.

REBELS TABBED FOR THIRD IN WEST: Ole Miss was picked to finish third in the SEC Western Division at the conference?s annual Media Days in Birmingham, Ala. Arkansas was picked to win the West, receiving 34 first-place votes followed by Alabama with 23 first-place votes. The Rebels received 11 first-place votes. Ole Miss was projected to finish ahead of Mississippi State, LSU and Auburn. Ole Miss also received one vote to win the overall SEC title.

WADE, SPEARMAN GARNER PRE-SEASON RECOGNITION: Senior offensive lineman Todd Wade and senior linebacker Armegis Spearman were both named 1999 pre-season first-team All-SEC at the SEC Media Days.

THE SPORTING NEWS TABS MILLER AS ONE OF NATION?S BEST: In its 1999 College Football preview, The Sporting News named junior Romaro Miller (Shannon, Miss.) as the nation?s fourth-best all-purpose quarterback. Last year in his first season as a starter, Miller threw for 2,273 yards ? the fifth-highest single-season total in Ole Miss history. In the Rebels? Independence Bowl win, Miller went 14-for-23 for 216 yards and set an Independence Bowl record with three TD passes and was selected as Offensive Player of the Game.

ARKANSAS REBELS: Ole Miss has three players on its roster that call the state of Arkansas home: senior TE Adam Bettis (Sherwood, AR/Sylvan Hills), senior DT Michael Boone (West Helena, AR/Central), sophomore RB Charles Stackhouse (West Memphis, AR/High).

MISSISSIPPI INDIANS:According to its 1999 media guide, Arkansas State has 11 players on its roster that hail from the state of Mississippi: senior LB Michael Bailey (Columbus, Miss./New Hope), sophomore WR Tony Britt (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport), senior SS Reggie Cooley (Heidelberg, Miss./High), junior WR Fred Ishman (Jackson, Miss./Provine), senior LB Scott Miller (Weir, Miss./Weir), senior OL Justin Rhodes (Pearl, Miss./Pearl), freshman LB John Shivers (Corinth, Miss./Corinth), senior P Ryan Smith (Sturgis, Miss./Starkville Academy), junior FB Jacquis Walker (Holly Springs, Miss./Holly Springs), freshman DL Damien Williams (Clarksdale, Miss./Clarksdale), and junior C Jack Wright (Batesville, Miss./South Panola),
