Women's Tennis Defeats No. 27 New Mexico

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss women's tennis team defeated 27th-ranked New Mexico, 8-1, in Sunday's dual match at the Women's Sports Complex. Ranked 7th nationally, the Lady Rebels improve to 3-0 for the season, while New Mexico falls to 1-3.
The only blemish on the afternoon was a loss by senior Celeste Frey, ranked 6th nationally, to 44th ranked Ana Frigonovic, 6-2, 6-3. Frey did rebound to win her doubles match with partner Mariana Eberle, 8-5, over Frigonovic and Ashley Hedbeg.
Making their home debut, freshmen Julie DeRoo and Mira Radu, both ranked in the top 30, were both winners. DeRoo defeated Hedbeg, 6-3, 6-2, and, paired with Alesya Ignatieva, defeated Nicoleta Spllca and Courtney Choate, 8-3, in doubles. Radu defeated Dominika Gerwin, 6-3, 6-2.
In the marathon match of the afternoon, Ignatieva came back from a one set deficit to defeat Neza Kurnik, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a match that lasted over two hours, before pairing with DeRoo in doubles to win the day's final match.
Other Lady Rebel winners were Ivona Mihailova, who defeated Natalla Alekhova, 6-2, 7-5, and paired with twin sister Irena Mihailova to defeat Dominika Gerwin and Caroline Pollock, 8-5, in doubles play. In addition to Eberle's doubles win, she defeated Nicoleta Spllca, 6-1, 6-1, in singles play.
Ole Miss will host 56th-ranked BYU on Tuesday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the Women's Sports Complex.
