OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team faces a pair of Southeastern Conference Eastern Division foes on the road this weekend.
The Rebels (11-4, 4-2 SEC) are in Athens, Ga., Friday to play the Georgia Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. (CST) in a game that will be broadcast regionally by Fox Sports Net South. Ole Miss faces Tennessee Sunday at 1 p.m. in Knoxville.
The Rebels began a stretch of four straight SEC East matches with a split of South Carolina and Florida last weekend. Ole Miss picked up its first regular season win over an Eastern foe since 1997 with Friday's 3-1 win over the Gamecocks. Sophomore midfielder Anna Sanders posted her first career two-goal game in the victory.
Sanders stuck again on Sunday but in a losing effort, as the Rebels fell to the 23rd-ranked Gators, 5-1. Despite the loss, Ole Miss, which has won 11 of its last 13, moved up to its highest ranking in program history this week at sixth in the Central Region, according to the NSCAA.
Georgia (8-6-2, 3-2-1 SEC) is fresh off a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Kentucky, its first win over a ranked opponent since 1998. However, the win was only the third in the last 10 games for UGA. Junior forward Amy Berbary has been the Dogs' top gunner this season, tallying a team-high seven goals and 15 points.
Tennessee (9-6, 5-1 SEC) rides into the weekend on a school record-tying five-game winning streak, all against conference competition. The Lady Vols' 3-2 triumph over Kentucky was the program's third ever win over a ranked foe, and saw Laura Lauter-Smith take over as UT's all-time leader in total points. The senior forward is one of five players, including top scorer Rhian Wilkinson (10), to boast three or more goals this season.
Ole Miss defeated both Georgia and Tennessee in the 1999 SEC Tournament on the way to a runner-up finish for the Championship. It was the Rebels' first ever win over Georgia (13 all-time series) and the second over the Lady Vols (2-1 all-time series). Ole Miss lost to both teams in the regular season last year in Oxford.
