Lady Rebels Tennis Fall At All-American And SEC Classic

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Julie DeRoo and Mira Radu lost their second round doubles match Friday to end Ole Miss' run at the prestigious Riviera All-American Championships at the Suburban Country Club.

DeRoo and Radu posted an opening round upset over the No. 4 seeded team of Michelle Dasso and Becky Varnum from Notre Dame 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. But against the team of Ashley Hedberg and Jessica Roland of Texas A&M, DeRoo and Radu never got going, losing 6-2, 6-1.

In consolation singles, DeRoo fell to Wake Forest's Janet Bergman 7-5, 6-2. The All-American Championships featured 32 of the top women's tennis players in the nation in singles and 16 of the top doubles teams. It is the second leg of the collegiate grand slam.

Across the country in Stone Mountain, Ga., several Lady Rebels are competing in the SEC Fall Coaches Classic. It was a tough day for Ole Miss in singles, but they fared much better in doubles.

In A Draw singles, freshman Hanna-Katri Aalto dropped a tough three-set match to Emmanuelle Berard of Alabama 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Junior Alesya Ignatieva defeated Crystal Cleveland of Tennessee 6-4, 6-2 in the first round, before falling to one of Florida's top recruits, Lindsay Dawaf, 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman Audra Adams won the first set against Alabama's Dominique Glinzler 6-2, but dropped the next two 6-3, 6-3 in the B Draw. Also in B Draw singles, junior Camilla Gould lost to Vanderbilt's top recruit, Aleke Tsoubanos, 6-0, 6-1

In doubles, both of Ole Miss' teams won to advance to Saturday's second round. In the A Draw, Aalto and Adams defeated Becca Baum and Glinzler of Alabama, 8-3 and in the B Draw, Gould and Ignatieva beat MSU's tandem of Linda Mattsson and Yumi Ueda, 8-5.

A DRAW FIRST ROUND -- Aalto-Adams (OM) def. Becca Baum-Glinzler (UA) 8-3

B DRAW FIRST ROUND -- Gould-Ignatieva (OM) def. Linda Mattson-Yumi Ueda (MSU) 8-5.
