Ole Miss Splits At Collegiate Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Ole Miss lost their first match on day one of the WingspanBank.com/WTT National Collegiate Tennis Championships to South Carolina, but rebounded in the afternoon to defeat San Diego State.

In the morning match, the Rebels dropped a 28-14 decision to South Carolina. The match started with women's doubles, where Katy Boyanovich and Jennifer Radman defeated Ole Miss' Hanna-Katri Aalto and Karem Harboe 6-0. Seth Rose gave South Carolina a 12-2 lead with his 6-2 win over David Blackburn.

Next up in men's doubles, Guillaume Legat and Seth Rose defeated Rebel netters Blackburn and Jim Jacobs 6-3 to make the score 18-5 Gamecocks. Aalto, a freshman for the Lady Rebels, knocked off South Carolina's top women's player Katarina Markovski, 6-4, in women's singles to make it 22-11, but in mixed doubles, Legat and Radman beat Aalto and Blackburn 6-3 for the final margin.

In the afternoon match, Ole Miss turned things around to edge San Diego State 21-18. Aalto and Harboe got things going with a 6-3 win over Julie Chidley and Whitney Wells in women's doubles. Valentino Pest of San Diego State downed Blackburn 6-2 to give the Aztecs a narrow 9-8 lead.

Oliver Maiberger and Pest downed Blackburn and Mason Cousins 6-1 in men's doubles as SDSU went out to a 15-9 lead. Aalto picked up her second singles win of the day, dominating Katy Becker 6-1 to pull Ole Miss within one 16-15.

Aalto and Blackburn delivered the knock out punch, with their 6-2 victory over Maiberger and Wells in mixed doubles.

Each team match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. One point is awarded for each game won. A nine-point tiebreaker is played if a set reaches five all. If necessary, overtime and a "Supertiebreaker" are played to determine the outright winner of the match.

Ole Miss will meet South Alabama Saturday at noon. The winners of each of the four groups will advance to the semifinals later in the afternoon. The finals will be played Sunday at noon.
