OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team will begin the 2000-01 season Thursday with an exhibition game against Slovan Bratislava. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Tad Smith Coliseum.
General admission tickets for the exhibition contest are $5, and Ole Miss students will be admitted free with a student ID.
This will be the first of two exhibition contests for the Lady Rebels, who will host the Houston Jaguars Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Ole Miss opens the regular season at the University of Vermont Howard Bank Classic Nov. 17-18 in Burlington, Vt.
The Lady Rebels return 10 letterwinners from the 1999-00 squad including Becky Myatt, who was named to the preseason All-SEC second team. Myatt averaged 9.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game last year.
Also back for the Lady Rebels is the second leading scorer from last year, Von Kirk, who averaged 9.7 points per game. Returning as floor generals are two veterans who split time at the point position last year, senior Chandra Dorsey and junior Takela Corbitt.
Several newcomers are on board this year who could figure into things early. Sherika Wright, a 5-6 guard from Augusta, Ga., was one of the top six JUCO guards in the country. High school standout Tenisha Gist, who will be vying for significant playing time, was named a USA Today honorable mention All-American and Miss Basketball in Tennessee.
Tywanna Inmon, a 6-1 forward from West Memphis, Ark., was named the MVP of the Arkansas All-Star game. Saundra Jackson, a 6-4 post player, will help fill the void created by the departed Frankie Boyd.
