OXFORD, Miss. Senior cornerback Ken Lucas and senior running back Deuce McAllister have been invited to play in the 2001 Senior Bowl. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20 in Mobile, Ala., and will feature some of the nation's most prominent collegiate seniors.
Lucas is just in his second full year as a defensive back after coming to Ole Miss as a wide receiver. He is rated as the nation's top senior defensive back, and No. 15 overall, for next April's National Football League draft by ESPN football analyst Mel Kiper, Jr. Lucas has been named to four All-America teams, including earning first team honors from Rivals.com. He was a first team All-SEC selection by the conference's coaches, and was second team selection by The Associated Press. Lucas led the Rebels in interceptions with five and also set a school single-season record with 25 passes defensed.
McAllister suffered through an injury plagued season, but still scored an SEC-leading 17 TDs to set a new school single-season mark. McAllister is projected by several scouting services as the top senior for next April's NFL Draft. He was selected to The Associated Press' first team All-SEC squad as an all-purpose player after accumulating 1,488 all-purpose yards. McAllister recorded a four-year total of 4,889 all-purpose yards to rank eighth on SEC's all-time list, and earlier this season became the 19th player in SEC history to rush for more than 3,000 yards in a career. In total, McAllister will leave Ole Miss with 18 school career, season and single-game records.
Ole Miss finished its season with a 7-4 record and will play West Virginia on Dec. 28 in the third-annual Music City Bowl, to be held at Adelphia Coliseum in Nashville, Tenn. It is the Rebels' fourth straight bowl appearance. Ole Miss is the only school from the SEC Western Division to appear in a bowl game in each of the past four seasons.
