ARLINGTON, Texas - The Ole Miss softball team got off to a rough start to the 2000 season, losing three games at the University of Texas-Arlington/Isuzu Motors Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Rebels (0-3) got strong pitching from freshman Lindsay Price in the opener against No. 22 Illinois-Chicago. Price held the Flames scoreless until Stefanie Christoferson hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh.
The Rebels were unable to capitalize with runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh as Illinois-Chicago held on for the 2-0 win.
The Baylor Bears used a pair of home runs to take a 3-1 decision from the Rebels in the second game of the day. Sarah Caudle cranked a solo shot off the Rebels' Jennifer Hughes in the fourth inning and Ryan Stukel ripped a two-run homer in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.
Ole Miss got a run in the sixth when Mandy Shklar scored on ground out by Kaci Coffee, but the Rebels were unable to overcome the lead.
In the final game of the day, Texas-Arlington capitalized on two first-inning Ole Miss errors to get an early 1-0 lead. The Rebels were held to two hits by UTA pitcher Cassie Brand and never advanced a runner past second base.
The Rebels will begin the second round of play Saturday at 9 a.m.
