McAvoy Shuts Down Louisiana Tech in Rain Shortened Game

OXFORD, Miss. - Right-hander Jeff McAvoy allowed one hit and struck out seven in six innings of work and first baseman Jude Voltz was 2-for-3 with two RBIs as Ole Miss (4-1) defeated Louisiana Tech 9-2 in a rain-shortened game Friday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The game was called after two pitches in the top of the seventh inning following a 45-minute rain delay.
The Rebels jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings to chase Bulldog starter Robert Ogle (2-1) after 2 1/3 innings. Ogle was charged with eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits and one walk.
Ole Miss plated three runs in the first, one in the second and broke the game open with four runs in the third.
Voltz hit his second home run of the year with a solo shot in the third to make it 5-0.
McAvoy (2-0) retired the first 10 batters he faced before allowing a one-out walk Travis McElory. Niko Bouzos followed with his second home run of the year to score Louisiana Tech's (4-5) only runs of the game to make the score 8-2.
The Rebels then scored a single run in the sixth on a RBI ground out by Banks Robinson to score Voltz.
Justin Huisman went 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI to lead the Rebels' 12-hit attack.
The two teams will play game two of their three-game series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Sophomore left-hander Nathan Lyons is scheduled to start for Ole Miss against Louisiana Tech's Adam Kirkendall.
