Ole Miss Softball Picks Up First Win Of Season

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss softball team picked up their first win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Nicholls State, but dropped two games to Evansville in the first day of the Ole Miss Invitational on Saturday.
The Rebels (1-7) will take on Nicholls St. at noon on Sunday and then play Evansville at 2 p.m. and Nicholls St. in the final game of the tournament at 4 p.m. The first 100 fans attending the Rebels' 4 p.m. game will receive a coupon for a free hot dog or bag of peanuts.
In the Rebels' first game of the day, Evansville put up two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Ole Miss put a run up in the bottom of the sixth when catcher Allison Willrath drove in outfielder Heather Swinney. The Rebels were unable to continue the rally and lost the game 3-1.
In game two, Ole Miss put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and freshman pitcher Holly Burris held Nicholls St. to only two hits in picking up her first win of the season.
In the fourth inning, Swinney singled in Phyllis Manley to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead. Kaci Coffee then tripled in two runs to give the Rebels a 3-0 advantage. Burris then capped the scoring with a double that scored Coffee to give the Rebels a 4-0 lead.
In the final game of the day, the Rebels fell behind 8-2 after Evansville put up six runs in the top of the sixth inning. But, Ole Miss rallied back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-7, but were unable to overcome the lead and took the one-run loss.
Rachel Davenport, Lindsay Price, Amanda Lehotak each drove in runs in the five-run rally.
The Ole Miss Invitational concludes Sunday. Evansville and Nicholls St. will open tomorrow's play at 10 a.m.
