Women's Tennis Sweeps Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisc. - The fifth-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team swept 49th-ranked Wisconsin, 7-0, in the consolation of the USTA/ITA Women's National Indoor Team Tennis Championship in Madison, Wisc. on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Rebels dropped only one doubles match, but fought back to take the doubles point in the nearly perfect day. Ole Miss (6-2) improved to 1-2 in the tournament, while tournament host Wisconsin (3-4) went 0-3 in the tournament.
Playing at No. 1 doubles, Mariana Eberle and Ivona Mihailova took an 8-5 win over April Gabler and Vojnov that clinched the doubles point after Celeste Frey and Irena Mihailova, playing at No. 2 singles overwhelmed Linda Mues and Vanessa Rauh, 8-1. The only blemish for the Lady Rebels was at No. 3 singles where Alesya Ignatieva and Camilla Gould were defeated by Shana McElroy and Dena Baritot, 8-6.
After securing the doubles point, the Lady Rebels went on to sweep all the singles matches, playing for the second straight day without No. 1 player Julie DeRoo due to illness. At No. 1 singles, Ivona Mihailova defeated April Gabler, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
At No. 2 singles, Celeste Frey came back from losing the first set to take a three set winner, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). Mira Radu, playing at No. 3 singles, also had to fight through a three set match, winning, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7).
The Lady Rebels then cruised through the rest of the Wisconsin line-up. Playing at No. 4, Mariana Eberle defeated Linda Mues, 7-5, 6-1, while Alesya Ignatieva defeated Dena Baritot, 6-0, 6-1. Irena Mihailova closed out the sweep for the Lady Rebels at No. 6 singles, defeating Katie Dougherty, 6-2, 6-2.
The Lady Rebels return home to take on South Alabama on February 24 at 1:00 p.m. at the Women's Sports Complex on the campus of Ole Miss.
