South Alabama Powers Past Ole Miss 14-7

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama hit three home runs and Peter Cooke pitched eight strong innings in relief as the Jaguars beat Ole Miss 14-7 in the opening game of a three-game weekend series Friday at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala. The loss snapped the Rebels (6-2) five-game winning streak.

Jason Glasscock hit the first of South Alabama's home runs with a three-run shot to cap a five-run inning to give the Jaguars (4-3) a 5-1 lead.

Ole Miss trimmed the lead to 6-5 before South Alabama broke the game open with a four-run inning. Tim Merritt highlighted the rally with a three-run home run to make it 10-5.

Justin Huisman led-off the sixth with his first home run of the season to cut the lead to 10-6, but the Jaguars Craig Remos hit a three-run double in the bottom half of the frame to increase South Alabama's lead to 13-6.

Tony Piccotti hit the Jaguars' other home run of the game with a two-out solo home run in the third to give South Alabama a 6-4 lead.

Cooke (1-1) relieved starter Casey Almond in the top of the second and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks to earn the win. He also struck out three.

Ole Miss starter Jeff McAvoy (2-1) surrendered 10 runs on eight hits and two walks in four innings in suffering the loss.

Four different Jaguars recorded two hits each as South Alabama out-hit Ole Miss 13-11.

Chad Hill, Carl Lafferty and Jude Voltz had two hits apiece for the Rebels. Lafferty also drove in two runs.

The two teams will play game two of the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Sophomore left-hander Nathan Lyons (1-1) is scheduled to start for Ole Miss against South Alabama's senior left-hander Eric Janecek (0-0).
