Lady Rebel Netters Win Three Matches At Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Julie DeRoo and Alesya Ignatieva combined to win three matches at the Virginia Tech Indoor Invitational Friday. The VT Indoor Invitational is a round- robin tournament that counts toward the individual records but is not scored as a team event.
DeRoo, ranked No. 30 in the nation, downed Ines Khelfi of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-1. She will play Cath Gazvin of Clemson in tomorrow's second round, which begins at 9:00 a.m. Ignatieva defeated Krissy Stubbs of VT, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. She will face Laurence Jayet of Clemson in the second round.
The Lady Rebels' other participant Camilla Gould lost her match to Antonella Pozzi of VT, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
DeRoo and Ignatieva teamed up in doubles to post an upset of 49th-ranked Jayet and Anna Savitskaya (Clemson) 8-5.
In other action, at the Rolex National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas, members of the Lady Rebel squad didn't fare as well. After first-round losses, sixth-ranked Celeste Frey and 14th-ranked Ivona Mihailova lost in the first round of consolation. Frey lost to Katherine Nasser 6-2, 7-6(3) and Mihailova fell to Megan Miller of Duke 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
Freshman Mira Radu, after her first-round upset of USC's Jewel Peterson (ranked No. 4), dropped a three-setter to Stanford's Lauren Kalvaria (ranked No. 13) 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-2.
