Women's Tennis Drops Tight Match To William & Mary

OXFORD, Miss. -- In a day that saw four singles matches stretched to three sets, the 16th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team fell to 11th-ranked William and Mary, 5-2, with the final two doubles matches canceled due to prior travel arrangements.

The Lady Rebels failed to capitalize in the very tight three-set matches, dropping all three, after leading 1-0 in two of them. Ole Miss did come away with wins in both two-set matches, before conceding the match with a loss at No. 1 doubles.

Ole Miss falls to 10-5 on the season, while William and Mary improves to 12-5. Both teams lost matches to Vanderbilt earlier this weekend in Oxford.

"It has been a disappointing week, in that we set our sights high and had confidence that we could win both matches this weekend," said Ole Miss head coach Jerry Montgomery. "Even though we lost, we still have high expectations for this year's team and the confidence to achieve those goals."

Playing at No. 1 singles, Lady Rebel Ivona Mihailova, ranked 19th nationally, dropped the first of the three-set matches to Carlijn Buis, ranked 75th nationally, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Julie DeRoo, ranked 28th nationally and playing at No. 2 singles, swept Carlijn van Rossum in the first set 6-0, before dropping the final two sets 6-4, 6-4, in her loss. At No. 3 singles, Celeste Frey gave the Lady Rebels their first victory, defeating Delphine Troch, 6-4, 6-3. Mira Radu became the third victim of the three-set losses. With two of the sets advancing to tie-breakers, she fell to Jessyca Arhtur, 7-6, 6-7, 6-1. Mariana Eberle pulled out a tight win for the Lady Rebels at No. 5 singles, beating Lindsay Sullivan in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5. Alesya Ignatieva closed out the singles for the Lady Rebels with their fourth three-set loss, falling to Andrea Coulter, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

With the Tribe up 4-2 entering doubles play, the Lady Rebel pair of DeRoo and Eberle took a 4-1 advantage over Buis and Troch at No. 1 doubles, before Buis and Troch stormed back to take the match and seal the victory for William and Mary, 8-5.

Ole Miss will have the majority of the week off to prepare for SEC-rival Auburn, who comes to Oxford next Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

"This week we will take some time off to get healthy, while also taking an objective look at what we need to do to get the next level," said Montgomery.
