Last Time Out
The Rebels opened SEC play at Mississippi State last weekend. Ole Miss went 1-3 against the No. 21 Bulldogs, losing two games by a combined three runs. The Rebels lost game one after surrendering two runs in the bottom of the seventh to fall 4-3. The Rebels salvaged the last game of the series with a 6-0 win over the Bulldogs. It was the Rebels first shutout win against an SEC team since a 2-0 win over Alabama on 4-10-99, and the first road shutout win over an SEC foe since a 4-0 win over Auburn on 4-18-98.
Rebels vs. UGA, Gamecocks
Ole Miss is a combined 2-11 against Georgia and South Carolina. The Rebels are 2-4 against the Bulldogs. Ole Miss split double-headers against Georgia in 1997 (4-1, 0-1) and in 1998 (6-0, 0-2). The Bulldogs swept the Rebels in 1999 (6-1, 4-3). The Gamecocks have had the Rebels number in previous seasons, going 7-0 against Ole Miss. South Carolina has outscored the Rebels 37-7 in the seven games and shutout the Rebels five times.
Shklar Heats Up
Senior shortstop Mandy Shklar is beginning to find her groove at the plate. After opening the season hitting .135, the Owasso, Okla., native has hit safely in eight of the last 10 games, including five straight. Shklar began to get on track at the Fresno State Invitational where she hit .385 with a double, triple and three runs batted in.
Holding the Lead
Although the Rebels have had trouble rallying for wins this season, they have had no problem holding on to leads. The Rebels are 12-1 when leading after the fifth inning this season, with the lone loss coming in the bottom of the seventh against Mississippi State in game one last weekend. Ole Miss has fared much worse when trailing after the fifth inning, going 0-16 in those games.
Tough "D"
Although the Rebels offense has been inconsistent, their defense has been one of the best in the SEC. Through 33 games, Ole Miss has the third best team defense in the conference with a .961 fielding percentage. The Rebels trail only LSU and Alabama which are tied for first with a .964 percentage. Individually, Ole Miss has four players ranked among the top five in fielding at their positions. Shortstop Mandy Shklar is second in the league with a .945 fielding percentage, while Rachel Davenport is fourth at second base with a .962 percentage. Freshman Amanda Lehotak is third in the SEC at first base with a .990 percentage, while catcher Allison Willrath is tied for fifth with a .988 percentage.
Rebels vs. the Top 25
Ole Miss has played six teams ranked in the top 25 this season and has an 1-8 record in those games. The Rebels opened the season with a 2-0 loss to No. 22 Illinois-Chicago, then dropped a 12-4 decision to No. 8 Oklahoma (in Norman) and a 5-0 loss to No. 17 Cal. State-Fullerton. Most recently, Ole Miss lost to No. 8 Fresno State 2-0 (in Fresno) and 4-0 to No. 3 UCLA. The Rebels then dropped three games to No. 21 Mississippi State in Starkville. Ole Miss notched its first win over a top 25 team with a 6-0 win over the Bulldogs in game four of the series.
