Ole Miss Softball Sweeps Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. - Freshman pitcher Holly Burris broke one Ole Miss record, tied another and pitched every inning of two games in leading the Rebels to a double-header sweep of the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens Friday night.

Ole Miss improves to 15-20 overall and 3-3 in the Southeastern Conference, while the Dawgs drop to 16-17 and 2-4.

Burris, a native of Memphis, Tenn., tied the team record with four RBI the Rebels' 7-6 win in game two. Burris went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double in the game and knocked in the game winning runs in the top of the fifth inning. Burris finished the day going 4-for-8 with four RBI and scored a run.

Ole Miss put up four runs in the top of the first on a two-run double by Heather Swinney and a two-run single by Burris. But, Georgia tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Mandy Shklar gave the Rebels a 5-4 lead with her second home run of season in the top of the third inning.

Georgia put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 7-6, but Burris slammed the door on the rally and allowed just one batter to reach base in the final two innings to secure the win.

In game one, the Bulldogs and Rebels went 10 long innings before a run was put on the board. Ole Miss scored a run in the top of the 10th on a Heather Swinney double. The game went into the 11th after the Bulldogs scored the tying run in the bottom of the 10th on a fielder's choice by Lindsay Phillips.

In the top of the 11th, Korrie Kashuba drove in Holly Burris for a 2-1 lead. Swinney then drove in Amanda Lehotak and Kashuba for a 4-1 lead.

Although the Bulldogs rallied for one run in the bottom of the 11th, Ole Miss pitcher Holly Burris managed to shut Georgia down for the 4-2 Rebel victory.

Burris improved to 7-6 with the win and set a team record by pitching all 11 innings. The Rebels also tied team records with 40 at bats and 33 putouts in the game. Lehotak, Jessica Hamilton, Swinney and Kaci Coffee each tied a team record with five at bats in a game.

The Rebels will play No. 17 South Carolina at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Game times are Eastern.
