Columbia, S.C. - The Rebel softball team recorded their first ever win over the South Carolina Gamecocks behind another strong pitching performance from freshman Holly Burris.
Ole Miss (16-21 overall, 4-4 SEC) defeated the 17th-ranked Gamecocks (24-13, 5-5) 1-0 in nine innings as Burris held South Carolina to two hits.
Burris finished the weekend with a 3-0 record after recording both wins in a sweep of Georgia on Friday. The two-hitter against the Gamecocks was Burris' third of the season and her fourth shutout of the year.
In game one, Burris did not allow a batter to reach base until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Rebels managed the game's only run in the top of the ninth.
Allison Willrath reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second after Heather Swinney walked. Kaci Coffee then sacrificed the runners over. Mandy Shklar then reached on a bunt single, but second baseman Kim Schultze who covered first base dropped the ball and allowed Willrath to score from third.
Burris put the Gamecocks down in order in the bottom of the ninth for her ninth win of the season.
Korrie Kashuba and Shklar each had two hits in the 1-0 victory.
In game two, the Gamecocks prevented the sweep by pounding out 10 runs on 12 hits for a 10-2 victory.
The Rebels' only runs came in the second and fifth innings. In the second, Rachel Davenport singled in Jamie Cummings, who pinch ran for Holly Burris. Mandy Shklar then drove in Davenport in the fifth for the Rebels' second run.
Shklar singled in the top of the first to extend her hitting streak to nine games and has now hit safely in 12 of the last 14 game.
Ole Miss returns to action on Wednesday against No. 10 Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
