HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Once again the Rebels relied upon strong pitching and clutch hitting to knock off a top 25 team as they split a double-header with the 10th-ranked Southern Miss Lady Eagles Wednesday night.
After a two-hour rain delay, the Rebels won game one 3-2 in 11 innings, then lost game two 6-4. Ole Miss is 17-22 overall, while Southern Miss is 31-9.
Ole Miss put four runs up in the top of the third in game two to take a 4-1 lead over the Lady Eagles who scored a run in the first inning.
Amanda Lehotak scored on a fielder's choice for the first run in the third inning, then Heather Swinney ripped a three-run homer to center to make it 4-1.
Southern Miss answered with four runs in the bottom of the third off starter Lindsay Price to take a 5-4 lead. The Lady Eagles increased the lead to 6-4 with a run in the bottom of the fourth and held the Rebels off the scoreboard to preserve the victory.
In game one, pitchers Holly Burris and Courtney Blades battled it out through 10 scoreless innings before a run was finally scored. Burris held the Lady Eagles hitless until the fourth inning and allowed only five hits in the game as the Rebels held on for 3-2 win.
Blades equaled Burris' performance with 17 strikeouts and pitched out of several jams as the Rebels stranded 11 runners on base.
In the top of the 11th inning, senior Korrie Kashuba doubled with two outs to score Kaci Coffee and Rachel Davenport, who pinch ran for Burris, to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead. Kashuba scored after two wild pitches by Blades to give Ole Miss a 3-0 lead over the 10th-ranked Lady Eagles.
In the bottom of the 11th, Southern Miss scored two runs to cut the margin to one run and had the tying run on second when Burris got Jennifer Ford to pop out to shortstop to end the game and give Ole Miss its third win over a top 25 team this season.
Burris again tied the team record for innings pitched with 11, after accomplishing the feat last weekend against Georgia. Burris also tied a personal best with eight strikeouts against the Lady Eagles and has won six consecutive starts.
The Rebels return to Oxford to host No. 9 LSU on Friday and Saturday. Game one on Friday is set for 5 p.m. with game two slated for a 7 p.m. start. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m. while game two is set for a 3 p.m. start.
