No. 9 LSU Sweeps Double-Header From Rebel Softball

3/31/2000 | Softball

Oxford, Miss. - The ninth-ranked LSU Tigers used superb pitching and the long ball to sweep the first double-header from the Ole Miss Rebels Friday night.

Ole Miss falls to 17-24 overall and 4-6 in the Southeastern Conference, while LSU improves to 29-7 and 7-1 in the SEC.

In game one, LSU's Shaunte' Fremin ripped a two-run homer over the left field fence in the top of the eighth inning to give the Tigers a 5-3 victory.

The Tigers scored two runs in the first off of starter Holly Burris who had her streak of six consecutive victories snapped with the loss.

Ole Miss tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Heather Swinney led off with a single and moved to second after a walk by Kaci Coffee. Jessica Hamilton then singled to load the bases.

Swinney and Coffee then scored on a throwing error by the LSU third baseman who overthrew the catcher on a failed pick-off attempt of Swinney.

The Rebels took the lead in the third inning when Mandy Shklar doubled home Amanda Lehotak who reached on a single to lead off the inning.

LSU tied the game in the fourth when Burris hit Jennfier Schuelke with the bases loaded.

In game two, LSU's Britni Sneed recorded her first career no-hitter as the Tigers blanked Ole Miss 3-0.

Sneed had a perfect game until a throwing error by the third baseman allowed Jamie Cummings to reach base in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ole Miss pitcher Lindsey Price held LSU to one run on four hits through six innings, but gave up two runs in the seventh, one coming on a solo homer, to give LSU a 3-0 advantage.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series with a double-header on Saturday. Game one will begin at 1 p.m., while game two is set for a 3 p.m. start. Live play-by-play action for both games will be carried on the Internet at www.olemiss.edu/depts/umaa/softball.
