Rebel Netters Knock Off No. 5 Tennessee On The Road

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The sophomore duo of Martin Selin and Kristofer Stahlberg stepped up yet again for the No. 8 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team clinching the doubles point, which proved huge as the Rebels knocked off No. 5 Tennessee, 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
With the win, the Rebels improve to 6-2 on the year overall and 1-0 in the SEC. The Rebels avenged a 4-3 loss to the Volunteers (9-4, 3-1) last year in Oxford.
Ole Miss got the early advantage by winning the crucial doubles point. Tennessee won 8- 2 at No. 2 doubles and then the Rebels took the No. 1 spot, 8-5. Selin and Stahlberg won a tiebreaker 9-8(4) over Peter Handoyo and Tate Roberts at No. 3 doubles to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead.
Tennessee's Adam Carey made it 1-1 by defeating Selin 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, but Ole Miss answered as freshman Alex Hartman upset 36th-ranked Mark Parsons 6-4, 6-4 at the top spot.
Roberts beat Rebel Vikrant Chadha 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to even the match at 2-2, and then James Shortall put Ole Miss on top with a thrilling 6-4, 6-7(1), 7-6(10) win at No. 3 singles over 31st-ranked Handoyo. Handoyo had three match points, while Shortall had two before finally winning.
Paul Podbury squared the match holding off Ole Miss' Stahlberg 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 5 singles. Tennessee had the early advantage at No. 6 singles with Mark Fitzpatrick winning the first set against Rebel Anders Stenman. But, Stenman, who is now 4-0 in three-set matches this year, rallied to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the win for the Rebels.
Ole Miss heads to Pensacola, Fla., Thursday to play West Florida. The match is slated to begin at noon EST.
