Spring Awards Announced At Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame and the Ole Miss M-Club Alumni Association recently honored several Ole Miss student-athletes for accomplishments both on and off the field.
Five freshmen members of the Ole Miss football team were honored with Scholar-Athlete awards in recognition of their compiling outstanding records both in the classroom and on the athletic field during their high school careers.
They included offensive lineman Theo Harris of Decatur, Tenn., defensive back Von Hutchins of Natchez, Miss., linebacker Jamil Northcutt of Tullahoma, Tenn., tight end Justin Sawyer of Centreville, Miss., and defensive back Wes Scott of Memphis, Tenn.
Also recognized during pregame ceremonies at the Red-Blue game was cornerback Anthony Magee of Collins, Miss., who received the Chucky Mullins Courage Award. Magee will wear the late Mullins' No. 38 during the upcoming 2000 football season.
Wide receiver Cory Peterson of Germantown, Tenn., received the Most Dedicated Player award from the Ole Miss Hinds County Chapter, while offensive lineman Terrence Metcalf of Clarksdale, Miss., and defensive back Justin Coleman of Columbus, Ga., shared the Jeff Hamm Memorial Award after being selected the outstanding players of the 2000 spring practice period.
The John Howard Vaught of Excellence went to All-America offensive tackle Todd Wade of Jackson, Miss. The award goes to a senior athlete who has exemplified the qualities of dedication, scholastic ability, morale, and performance.
Defensive back Ronnie Heard of Lake Jackson, Tex., received the Leadership Award from the Birmingham Alumni Club in recognition of his leadership qualities both on and off the field.
The Clower-Walters Scholarship was presented to All-America defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy of Tuscaloosa, Ala. The award was established by the late Jerry Clower in honor of the late Carl Walters, a Mississippi sportswriter who covered Ole Miss. A scholarship to the University is also presented in Clancy's name. Defensive end Shane Elam of Covington, Tenn., was selected to receive the J. Richard Price Courage and Compassion Award, which is presented annually to the rising senior lineman who, in the opinion of his coaches, has demonstrated extraordinary courage and unusual compassion in his dedication to his team and to Ole Miss.
Also recognized was senior soccer player Brooke Riley of Gulfport, Miss., who received the Eugenia Conner Memorial Award for Achievement. The award honors the late Eugenia Conner, who is the only Lady Rebel basketball player to earn All-Southeastern Conference honors four years and was one of the most popular student-athletes ever at Ole Miss.
