OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 15 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team won the doubles point and then took it to 21st-ranked Mississippi State in singles for a 6-1 win at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Rebels improve to 17-4 overall, 9-2 in the SEC, while Mississippi State rops to 10-6 and 6-5 in conference. Ole Miss snapped MSU's 10-match home winning streak and the Rebels have now won four straight over the Bulldogs.
"The key to the match was that we played hard at every position," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "We knew what it would take to win and down the stretch, it was a tremendous team effort. It is always tough to beat State, especially a good State team, in Starkville. This will give us momentum heading into the conference tournament."
Ole Miss took the early advantage by winning the doubles point. State won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and then the Rebels captured the No. 2 spot 8-4. The point was won at No. 3 doubles in an exciting tiebreaker with the Rebels'Alexander Hartman and Anders Stenman claiming a 9-8(6) victory against Chris McDonald and Mathieu Soto.
Marco Baron, ranked No. 11 in the nation, downed 35th-ranked Hartman 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to tie the match but that would be it for the Bulldogs. Senior Vikrant Chadha finished off Rene Charles- Combette 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to make it 2-1 Rebels.
Sophomore Martin Selin downed Mathieu Soto 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead and then his doubles partner Kristofer Stahlberg clinched the victory by handing David Ruiz a 6-1, 6-4 defeat at No. 4 singles.
Ole Miss tacked on two more points as James Shortall rallied to beat 78th-ranked Jeremy Bayon, State's lone senior, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Right about the time the Rebels clinched the match, Stenman split sets with MSU's Charles Sevigny on court five. It didn't take him long to come away with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win to close a near perfect day for the Rebels.
The Rebels will be the No. 3 seed in the SEC Championships which begin this week in Starkville and will the play the winner of the #6 Mississippi State/#11Alabama match on Friday at noon.
