David Cutcliffe
Head Football Coach
The University of Mississippi

In his first full season as head coach at Ole Miss, David Cutcliffe wrapped up the 1999 campaign with an 8-4 overall record, including a thrilling last-second victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Sanford Independence Bowl. The Bowl victory gives Cutcliffe a second year record of 9-4, as head coach.

Considered one of the best offensive minds in college football, Cutcliffe became The University of Mississippi's 34th head coach on December 2, 1998, after serving 16 seasons at the University of Tennessee.

The Cutcliffe era at Ole Miss got an early start when the Rebels were selected to play Texas Tech in the 1998 Sanford Independence Bowl. With less than a month to hire a staff and prepare the Rebels, Cutcliffe directed Ole Miss to possibly the season's biggest upset, a 35-18 victory over the heavily-favored Red Raiders.

Cutcliffe, 45, entrusted with three key responsibilities on Phillip Fulmer's Tennessee staff, has long been recognized as one of the most highly esteemed assistant coaches in college football. In December of 1998, the long-time Tennessee aide capped his career as an outstanding assistant coach when he was named to receive the Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach. He had also been a Broyles Award finalist in 1997.

Cutcliffe's workload at Tennessee documents the trust placed in him by Fulmer, whom he served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He filled all three posts both capa-bly and enthusiastically.

In the latter position, David supervised the development of Heath Shuler and Peyton Manning as they directed the rewriting of the Vol record book during the Fulmer head coaching era. As soon as he was named Tennessee head coach before the Hall of Fame Bowl in 1992, Fulmer added responsibilities of assistant head coach and offensive coordinator to Cutcliffe's previous assignment of working with quar-terbacks. Early in his UT career, David coached tight ends and then running backs. Under Cutcliffe's direction, Tennessee records were reshaped by Shuler, Manning and before them, Andy Kelly. While serving on the Tennessee staff, Cutcliffe helped the Vols compile a 154-46-7 record while win-ning five SEC championships and one national title. In his 16 years at Tennessee, the Vols went to 15 bowl games, winning 11 times and rolling up five straight bowl victories during one stretch. A Birmingham native, Cutcliffe signed a scholarship with Bear Bryant's Alabama Crimson Tide fresh out of Banks High School in 1972. However, an injury ended his football-playing days at Tuscaloosa. The one-time linebacker graduated from Alabama in 1976 and went immediately into the coaching pro-fession. Cutcliffe's first assignment came at his high school alma mater, Banks. His first four years were spent as an assistant coach. He was promoted in 1980 to head coach of the perennially strong Birmingham school and compiled a 17-4-1 record over a two-year period.

Cutcliffe is married to the former Karen Oran and they have two children - Chris (13) and Katie (11). Karen's brother, Eddie Oran, is a former assistant basketball coach at Ole Miss (1977-81).
