OXFORD, Miss. - Tennessee won four of the six singles matches and then the team of Agnes Wiski and Candy Reid defeated Lady Rebels' Ivona Mihailova and Alesya Ignatieva 8-3 at No. 3 doubles to clinch a 5-4 victory Friday afternoon in quarterfinal action of the SEC Women's Tennis Championships, at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.
With the win, Tennessee (18-10) advances to the semifinals for the third time in the last four years to face the winner of the Georgia/Mississippi State match Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Ole Miss drops to 15-7 on the year.
"We need to give credit to Tennessee," head coach Jerry Montgomery said. "They did a good job of coming through in the tight matches. We actually had a match point at number one singles and we won the firs sets at No. 3 and 5 and didn't come through. We did a great job of coming back in the doubles, but Tennessee outplayed us at No. 2 doubles. We had high expectations coming into this tournament so obviously this is very disappointing."
Lady Rebel Celeste Frey dominated Wiski 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead, but Tennessee answered when Crystal Cleveland defeated Alesya Ignatieva 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. At No. 5 singles, Tennessee's Reid came back to beat Lady Rebel freshman Mira Radu 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to give Tennessee a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Vols would take a 3-1 lead following Vilmarie Castellvi's come back win over Julie DeRoo at No. 3 singles. DeRoo won the first set 7-5 but Castellvi took command in the final two for a 5- 7, 6-3, 6-1 win.
Senior Mariana Eberle pulled Ole Miss to within 3-2 with her 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 victory against Meiling Parks at No. 4 singles, with court one having split sets. On court one, Ole Miss' Ivona Mihailova lost the first 6-2 to Tennessee's Alison Ojeda, but she came back and won the second set 6-3 to force a deciding set. Mihailova was serving for the match at 6-5 in the third set, but it went it to a tiebreaker. Ojeda stormed out to a 5-1 lead before seeing Mihailova rally to tie it at 5-5. Ojeda won the next two points to give the Lady Vols a 4-2 lead going into doubles play.
Ole Miss won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles with the team of DeRoo and Irena Mihailova and then Frey and Eberle defeated Ojeda and Castellvi 8-5 at No. 1 doubles to make it 4-4. But Tennessee was too tough at No. 2 doubles with Reid and Wiski clinching the match.
The Lady Rebels will now wait to find out the NCAA Regional pairings and if they will get the chance to host a regional.
In other quarterfinal action, Vanderbilt, seeded No. 3, won two of the three doubles matches to take a 5-3 win over South Carolina. Jenny Miller and Anne Plessinger defeated South Carolina's Katarina Markovski and Anne Plessinger 8-6 at No. 3 doubles to clinch the win. In the other morning match, No. 2 seed Florida downed LSU 5-1, winning all five matches in straight sets.
