Ole Miss Split With Tigers in Softball Double-header

Auburn, Ala. - Ole Miss pitcher Jennifer Hughes kept the Rebels in the hunt for a berth in the Southeastern Conference Tournament as she picked up a 5-2 victory in game two against the Auburn Tigers on Saturday.
Hughes' win put Ole Miss (21-36, 8-16 SEC) a half-game ahead of the Tigers (31-26, 7-16) for the eighth and final tournament spot.
Hughes allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts to pick up her second win of the series and improve to 6-5 overall.
In game two, Ole Miss jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off an RBI double by Heather Swinney that scored Mandy Shklar.
After the Tigers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first, the Rebels took the lead again on an RBI double by Jamie Cummings that scored Phyllis Manley.
Ole Miss added two more runs in the top of the third inning for a 4-1 lead. Swinney scored on a single to right by Manley and Willrath scored on a throwing error by the right fielder.
Auburn pulled within 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth off a solo homer by Mary Petrie, but the Rebels added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Swinney scored on a double to left by Amanda Lehotak and Manley drove in Lehotak with a double to right. Manley's double was the fifth of the day for the Rebels which tied a team record set in 1997 against LSU.
In game one, the Tigers put up a run in the bottom of the first inning for an early 1-0 lead. Auburn then added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a commanding 5-0 lead. The Tigers capped the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final 6-0 margin.
Auburn pitcher Jamie Rasmussen allowed eight hits in picking up the complete game shutout victory.
Although the Rebels out-hit the Tigers, Ole Miss batters left nine runners stranded on base in the game. The Rebels stranded runners in every inning except the third and left two runners on base three times in the game.
