Softball Falls To Alabama In Doubleheader

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama's Lacy Prejean delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth in the second game to give the Crimson Tide a doubleheader sweep over Ole Miss in Southeastern Conference softball action on Friday. Alabama improved to 44-7 overall and 14-2 in the SEC, while Ole Miss fell to 17-30 overall and 4-10 in the league.
The Crimson Tide began their game-winning rally when Christy Kyle was hit by a pitch. Kierstin Arntsen pinch-ran for Kyle, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored when Prejean singled.
Julie Lindner (7-1) picked up the victory for Alabama, allowing no hits and striking out six in 4.2 innings. Holly Burris (10-10) suffered the loss for the Rebels. Burris struck out five in the loss.
The Crimson Tide took a quick 2-0 lead in game two, scoring both runs in the first. Alabama scored the two runs on consecutive hits by Kelly Kretschman, Ginger Jones and Kyle. The Rebels responded with two runs in the fifth to tie the contest. After Mandy Shklar and Kaci Coffee both singled, Allison Willrath doubled to score Shklar. Coffee later crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
In the first game, Kretschman went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI to lift the Crimson Tide to an 8-1 win. Kretschman's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth broke the game open and gave Alabama a 6-1 lead. The Crimson Tide added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Kristi Frenier two-run blast for the final 8-1 margin of victory.
Coffee led the Ole Miss offense in the first game, going 2-for-3. Shklar scored the Rebels' lone run in the top of the fourth.
Shelley Laird (23-4) picked up the win for Alabama, giving up only four hits and striking out seven in her complete-game effort. Lindsay Price (2-11) suffered the loss for the Rebels, striking out four in six innings of action.
