OXFORD, Miss. -- Conor Casey, a standout junior tennis player from Ontario, Canada, has signed a national letter of intent to join the University of Mississippi men's tennis program beginning in the 2000-01 academic year Rebel head coach Billy Chadwick announced Wednesday.
"Conor is a very talented player with a well-rounded game," Chadwick said. "He possesses the fundamentals and style of game to become a great college player. He will be an asset in both singles and doubles and we are very excited about his decision to join our program."
Casey was ranked No. 4 in juniors last year and his recent wins include a victory over Canadian Junior Champion Peter Richman. He was also a finalist in the Eastern Canadian National in February, where he defeated a present Tunisian Davis Cup player Ouallid Jellall.
For the past year he has trained at the Ace Tennis Academy in Burlington, Ontario, under the direction of former Canadian Davis Cup Coach Pierre Lamarche.
"Conor Casey will turn out to be the hidden blue chipper that every coach wants," Lamarche said. "The nephew of ATP great Leif Shiras, Conor has a late maturing game. He has a powerful serve, great volleys and the required slice of all great serve and volleyers. His commitment over the last 12 months has translated into a new found level of play, which will only get better. He has the potential to be a future All-American at Ole Miss."
The Rebels ended the 1999-2000 season with an 18-5 record and their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA Team Championships. The next action for the Rebels will be the NCAA individual singles and doubles championships next week in Athens, Ga.
