ATHENS, Ga. -- Ole Miss men's tennis freshman Alexander Hartman advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Patrick Gottesleben of Southern California.
Hartman, ranked No. 26 in the nation, was one of three freshmen to qualify for the 64-player singles field. With the win, he improved to 33-17 overall, and will meet the winner of the match between Stanford's K.J. Hippensteel and Duke's Doug Root, in Thursday's second round.
If he wins the next round, Hartman would become the 14th All-American in Ole Miss men's tennis history. The last player to earn All-America honors was Sebastien DeChaunac in 1997. Hartman already earned All-SEC honors this year and was the ITA Region III Player-to-Watch. He is up for the ITA National Player-to-Watch Award which will be announced at the ITA Hall of Fame Banquet Wednesday evening.
The Rebel tandem of James Shortall and Vikrant Chadha will begin competition in the doubles championships Thursday. The 18th-ranked duo will meet Salil Seshadri and Akran Zaman of Columbia University in the first round.
