OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe announced Friday the signing of linebacker Wesley Holmes of Nashville, Tenn., to a football scholarship.

"Wesley is an outstanding player who comes from a quality program," Cutcliffe said. "He is a great addition to our linebacker corps with the ability to play either inside or outside."

Holmes, a 6-3, 210 pounder, was a two-time All-State selection while playing for Coach Maurice Fitzgerald at Pearl-Cohn High School in Nashville. He is expected to report to Ole Miss on August 4 with the remainder of the 2000 signee class.

A two-time All-Mid State, All-Region, and All-City selection, Holmes was the Mid-State, Region, and City Defensive Player of the Year in 1999. He also was selected to the Tennessee All- Star team.

Holmes started all four years and helped lead Pearl-Cohn to state championships in 1996 and 1997, plus a district title in 1998. Pearl-Cohn was district runner-up in 1999.

As a senior, Holmes was credited with 187 tackles, eight QB sacks, seven caused fumbles, and three pass interceptions.

Holmes also earned three letters in tennis, two in basketball, and one in baseball. He was an All-Region pick in basketball while also rating All-Metro honors and was one of the Top 10 leading rebounders in the state.
