OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football squad continued its two-a-day practices on Saturday, and while Rebel head coach David Cutcliffe was pleased with the team's effort, he has his sights set on Monday's practices, which will be the first in full pads.

"We're got good work in both practices today, and we're able to work a lot of people," said Cutcliffe. "A lot of our young players are getting valuable reps, and I see them doing some things well. I thought our defense played with a lot of energy in tonight's practice, and that was good to see.

"We'll be in meetings tomorrow (Sunday). We have a lot of film to catch up on, and a lot of work to do in those meetings. I am anxious to get to Monday's practices."

Cutcliffe also has been pleased with the conditioning of the team which has helped during two-a-days.

"Our off-season conditioning has helped a lot," Cutcliffe said. "This team is in better condition than last year's squad. One of our goals this preseason was for the players to have less missed practice time than last year.

"The players also understand a little more of what to expect. I don't think they knew what to expect (in preseason drills) last year. They now understand what they have to do in the summer to prepare for how we are going to practice."

In Saturday's evening session, senior running back Deuce McAllister missed a small part of practice with a tight hamstring.

The Rebels open their 2000 season on Sept. 2 versus Tulane in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Kickoff for the opener is 11:35 a.m., and the contest will be televised by Jefferson-Pilot. "Meet the Rebels" Day is slated for Saturday, Aug. 19 at 1:00 p.m.
