OXFORD, Miss. - Senior quarterback Romaro Miller completed 13-of-23 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns during Ole Miss' situational scrimmage Tuesday afternoon at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field.
Ole Miss ran 92 plays, focusing on different game situations. The Rebel offense totaled 539 yards, including 384 in the air. In addition to Miller's 200-yard passing day, redshirt freshman Eli Manning connected on 10-of-18 passes for 127 yards and a score, and junior David Morris was 2-of-5 for 48 yards.
"I thought our offense got off to a slow start," said Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe. "I was concerned about that but they picked it up as the scrimmage went on. Today was good for us in that we got a lot of snaps and worked on a lot of situational things that we can grow from. Now we have to start polishing the things we're doing, but we did a lot of great work out here today."
Senior Grant Heard was the top receiver, recording four catches for 45 yards, including a 10-yard TD catch from Miller. Senior Deuce McAllister had three receptions for 32 yards, junior Ross Barkley had two catches for 66 yards, including a long of 55 from Manning, and junior Omar Rayford also caught two passes for 55 yards and a score.
Junior running back Joe Gunn was the scrimmage's leading rusher with 48 yards on six carries. Sophomore Chico Chandler had 41 yards on 17 carries and a TD, while McAllister netted 34 yards on 10 carries and had two, one-yard TD plunges.
Senior linebacker Amzie Williams recorded a scrimmage-high eight tackles, including four solo hits. Sophomore LB Lanier Goethie, redshirt freshman LB Justin Wade, and redshirt freshman DB Marcus Woodson all had six stops each.
Junior WR Jamie Armstrong, junior FB Charles Stackhouse and senior OL Keydrick Vincent all saw action Tuesday after missing Saturday's scrimmage.
Ole Miss is scheduled to open its 2000 season on Sept. 2 against Tulane in Oxford. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. as Jefferson Pilot will televise the game.
