ASK DEUCE
(August 28, 2000)
Q: How do you prepare yourself for each game, and does it matter who the opponent is?
- Jason Scarborough, Brandon, Miss.
- John Kennedy, Nashville, Tenn.
- Roy S. Lane, Tupelo, Miss.
- Kevin Johnson, Pontotoc, Miss.
A: I use basically the same routine each game. I try to keep a variety of music with me -- rap, R & B and gospel. Before each game I listen to music and focus on my job. As the season goes on, I try and keep the same routine, just maybe change the music.
Q: Deuce, what aspect of your running game do you need to improve on.
- Asher McClinton, Los Angeles, Calif.
- Natasha Kennedy, Stone Mountain, Georgia.
A: The biggest thing is being a more physical runner and being able to finish a run off.
Q: Who is your favorite running back, besides yourself, to watch in college football?
- Asher McClinton, Los Angeles, Calif.
A: The most exciting college running back that I like to watch are (TCU's) LaDanian Tomlinson and (Maryland's) LaMont Jordan. I have had the opportunity to watch films on both of them and they each have different running styles.
Q: What is it about a gameday Saturday in Oxford that you love the most?
- James Gill, Beach City, Ohio
A: Walking through The Grove. It is definitely an experience.
Q: Growing up, which NFL running back did you idolize?
- Sam Hiremath, Indianapolis, Ind.
- Patrick Payne, Tupelo, Miss.
- Lacey P. Grayson, Oxford, Miss.
A: Walter Payton. He was such a physical player. Rarely did you see Walter Payton step out of bounds. That's something that I've tried to add to my game.
Q: Deuce, I am trying out for tailback for the 7th grade Morton Panthers, and I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to win the spot?
- Adam Blake, Morton, Miss.
A: The best advice I can give is to work hard and not get down on yourself. That's probably the biggest thing because not everything is going to be easy, and there's never going to be a day where you feel that you did everything perfect. You just have to continue to work hard to get better everyday.
Check back next Monday for more answers.
