Volleyball Earns Double Win At Hampton Inn/Jayhawk Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Ole Miss volleyball team got off to a good start at the Hampton Inn/Jayhawk Classic Friday, defeating Furman and West Virginia by identical 3-1 scores.

The Lady Rebels started the tournament by taking out Furman, 18-16, 15-9, 11-15, 15-7, in the first match of the tournament. Junior outside hitter Jaime Burns paced Ole Miss with 18 kills and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Abby Hollander set a new career high with 11 kills.

Seniors Renata Nowacki and Kira Zschau both tallied double-doubles. Nowacki recorded 46 assists and 13 digs, while Zschau added 12 kills and 12 digs.

In the second match of the day for the Lady Rebels, a 16-14, 15-10, 14-16, 15-11 win over West Virginia, Zschau led the way as she set a new career high with 20 kills. She also contributed 16 digs and three block assists. Burns again recorded 18 kills for Ole Miss and added 16 digs.

The Lady Rebels had five players in double figures with digs. In addition to Zschau and Burns, Nowacki (11), sophomore Erin Newsom (18) and sophomore Sarah Lansden (12) tallied more than 10 digs. Nowacki led the team in assists with 56 and Newsom and junior Leigh Rittiner both had nine total blocks.

Ole Miss will return to action Saturday, when the face East Carolina at 2:30 p.m. They will then close out the tournament against host Kansas at 7 p.m.
